What is the Georgia boundary dispute with Tennessee?

If you live in Georgia, you may have heard about the boundary dispute with Tennessee. Boundary disputes are not uncommon. Everyday, people have disagreements with neighbors over their property lines. Many fences over time have succumbed to being built over a property line. However, this case between these two states is something that has been going on for a very long time and actually has higher stakes than just getting a little land back.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the boundary dispute between the two states has been going on for over 200 years. The original survey of the borders was incorrect when done in 1818. It was off by one mile, extending Tennessee's border one mile into Georgia.

Georgia has tried various times in court to get the land back and readjust the state borders. However, this time, the state is serious. It does not expect to get all the land back. It only wants a part of it. Specifically, the part containing Nickajack Lake, which also includes part of the city of Chattanooga. The reason is that Georgia is having a water crisis and needs the lake to supply water.

Tennessee is having none of this, though. It says Georgia's water problems are its issue to deal with. Georgia in response is trying negotiations and seeking to work something out. Currently, it is having no luck. The hope is the case goes to the Supreme Court to get a final ruling. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
